As a mark of respect for those who died while serving in the U.S. military on Memorial Day, flags shall be lowered to half-staff at sunrise on Monday, May 25, 2026, and returned to full-staff at noon on Monday, May 25, 2026, by order of the Mayor of the Â鶹AV, Zohran Kwame Mamdani.
Memorial Day is a time of reflection and remembrance, honoring U.S. military service members who died in the line of duty. It originated after the American Civil War when communities began holding springtime commemorations for fallen soldiers. Over time, it evolved into a National Day of Remembrance for all U.S. military personnel who have died in service across all wars. In 1971, it was officially designated a federal holiday.
This includes all flags, the American flag, the New York State and City flags, and the POW-MIA flag on all City buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs.
