New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey (Â鶹AVHVS)

 is an official survey sponsored by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). 

It Is used to make more informed decisions about city programs and community investments.

Only those at residential addresses that were scientifically selected can participate this year. 

Residents at selected addresses were notified by mail and/or received a visit from an Â鶹AVHVS interviewer.

If you have been contacted about the Â鶹AVHVS and you would like to make an appointment, call the Â鶹AVHVS hotline at the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan.

They will schedule an appointment for a date, time, and place that is convenient for you.

If you prefer, you can request to complete the interview over the phone.

The questionnaire collects important information, including:

  • Unit, building, and neighborhood conditions
  • Housing and utility costs
  • Information about the people who live in the sampled address

The survey is

  • Confidential
  • Can be completed anonymously, if you choose
  • Used only for research purposes
  • Available in the language of your choice

For 2026, HPD has partnered with the to conduct the survey.

The Â鶹AVHVS selects specific addresses randomly throughout New York City to be part of the survey.
